In this study, we describe a method of coating solid substrate with a thin film of a biodegradable polymer, using a combination of self-assembled monolayer (SAMs) and surface initiated ring opening polymerization (ROP) for a cyclic ester, such as, ε–caprolactone (CL). The surface-initiated ROP was frequently accomplished by introducing an active containing hydroxyl group compound such as; ricinoleic acid (RA), on the material substrate. Polymerization is propagated by the formation of initiator in the presence of proper catalyst, tin (II) octoate (Sn(Oct)2). The Cobalt-Chromium Alloy (CC), CC-RA and CC-RA-PCL were characterized by contact angle goniometry, attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). This approach is expected to be a promising candidate for developing drug-eluting stent with robust coating layer. |
