Isotopes are chemically similar but exhibit characteristic differences. For example, the chromatographic retention contrast of hydrogen and deuterium allowed an excellent 2D-LC separation of comb-shaped polystyrene of an hPS backbone and dPS branches. To elucidate the separation mechanism of the PS comb in more detail, the investigation of the isotope effect was carried out using diblock copolymers of hPS and dPS. In this study, a series of hPS-b-dPS, in which the length of hPS is fixed and the length of dPS is varied, was synthesized to study the retention behavior of the hPS-b-dPS at both HPLC critical conditions of each block. It is often claimed that a block in block copolymers is “chromatographic invisible” at the critical condition. We found that the block at its critical condition is not fully invisible at both cases. We also successfully demonstrated that the separation of the PS comb could be realized at the near critical condition of dPS at which hPS is slightly interactive |
