Neutron Diffraction Investigation of Fatigue Crack Propagation in Stainless Steel |

Fatigue crack growth behaviors of the as-fatigued and tensile-overloaded compact-tension (CT) specimens were investigated using in-situ neutron diffraction. The stress mapping experiments have been carried out using Residual Stress Instrument (RSI) at the High-Flux Advanced Neutron Application Reactor of the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. Residual stress distributions were examined as a function of distance from the crack tip along the crack-growth direction at the mid-thickness and near the surface using 1-mm spatial resolution of neutron beam. In addition, evolution of stress fields around the fatigue crack tip was investigated along the through-thickness direction under in-situ loading. The results show that the residual stress fields at the surface were much larger than those at the mid-thickness. A transfer rate of stress concentration at the crack tip was faster at the mid-thickness than the surface, which results in a higher driving force of crack growth and therefore a faster crack growth rate at the mid-thickness. |
