Fluorescent semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots) have the potential to revolutionize biological imaging and single cells detection, but their use has been limited by difficulties in obtaining biocompatible and targeted nanocrystals. By the way of early detection of cancer cells with quantum dots, we desire to treat incurable tumor in early stage effectively. Quantum dots also fulfill the promise of fluorescent semiconductor nanocrystals for both in vitro and in vivo studies. Compared to other systems such as organic dye, they simultaneously provide efficient fluorescence, a great reduction in photo-bleaching, colloidal stability in a variety of bio-environments, and low nonspecific adsorption. We hope that quantum dots might be integrated with targeting, imaging and therapeutic agents to develop ‘smart’ nanostructures for noninvasive imaging, diagnosis and treatment of cancer, cardiovascular plaques and other diseases. |
