Synthesis of novolac resin using cardanol and its application to bactericidal coating |

Novolacs based on nonylphenol, 3-pentadecylphenol (PDP), cardanol and cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) were synthesized and their molecular weights (Mn, Mw and PDI) and structural properties were investigated. Novolacs from cardanol and CNSL had higher molecular weights than those from nonylphenol or PDP, which is ascribed to the partial cross-linking of unsaturated bonds in cardanol and CNSL. Then, the applicability of the prepared novolacs as bactericidal coating materials was investigated. Novolacs from PDP and CNSL showed about 85% bactericidal activity and those from nonylphenol and cardanol showed 97% or more of bactericidal activity against E. coli. Therefore the prepared novolac materials can be applied to bactericidal coating materials. |
