Synthesis of Phenol formaldehyde resin using cardanol and its application to antibacterial coating |

Novolacs were synthesized using nonylphenol, 3-pentadecylphenol (PDP), cardanol and cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) and their molecular weights (Mn, Mw and PDI) and structural properties were measured. Novolac resins synthesized using cardanol and CNSL had higher molecular weights than those using nonylphenol or PDP through the partial cross-linking of unsaturated bonds in cardanol and CNSL. Then, the applicability of the prepared novolacs as antibacterial coating materials was investigated. Novolacs from PDP and CNSL showed about 85% antibacterial activity and those from nonylphenol and cardanol showed 97% or more of antibacterial activity against E. coli. Therefore, we concluded that the synthesized novolac using cardanol with high molecular weights and antibacterial activity is the most suitable materials for application in bactericidal coatings. |
