In this work, two types of norbornene-functionalized MWNT (NMWNTs) were successfully prepared and characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to confirm covalent functionalization. We also investigated the effect of NMWNTs with different branch length on thermo-mechanical properties of poly(5-ethylidene-2-norbornene/5-norbornene-2-methanol) (ENB/NM) nanocomposites initiated by the 2nd generation Grubbs' catalyst. It was found that both functionalizations can provide NMWNTs with the good and stable dispersion in the ENB/NM matrix. With the increase of NMWNTs loading, tensile toughness showed a great enhancement over neat polymer, while elastic modulus and yielding tensile stress also increased. Furthermore, the glass transition temperature of the resultant nanocomposites was evaluated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). |
