Dumbbell-shaped aromatic amphiphilic molecules were synthesized and investigated their self-assembling behavior by using DSC, X-ray scatterings, and TEM. The molecule 1 based on linear branch shows a 2-D rectangular columnar structure. With larger cross-section of the dendritic wedge, the molecule 2 and 3 based on dibranch and tetra branch showed multi-transitions on increasing temperature, which self-assembled into a 2-D oblique columnar and hexagonal columnar. These results demonstrated that as the cross sectional area of the flexible dendron attached at the both ends of the rigid rod segments increases at the fixed rod to coil volume ratio, organized 2-D structure changes from rectangular columnar to oblique columnar structures by the scissor-like motion of the rods. It is remarkable that this twist motion takes place in a reversible way by the thermal behavior of 2 and 3. |
