Organic π-conjugated chromophore with cyano group acceptor for solution-processed organic solar cells |

Novel D-A-D type organic π-conjugated chromophore (RCNR) with trans-1,2-Dicyanoethylene moiety as electron-acceptor unit was synthesized and investigated the effect of cyano groups on the photo physical and electrochemical properties. The photovoltaic properties of the RCNR were also significantly affected by the cyano acceptor and alkylbithiophene donor moieties. The organic chromophore exhibits sharp absorption and emission peaks due to the presence of strong electron-withdrawing nature of two nitrile (–CN) groups. The presence of alkyl chains on both sides of RCNR enhanced its solubility in the common organic solvents. The fabricated devices of RCNR with RCNR:PC60BM (1:3, w/w) ratio exhibits the PCE of ~2.69% with JSC of ~9.68 mA/cm2 and VOC of ~0.79 V. This showed a promising results and its further architecting would surely enhance the optical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of devices based on such organic chromophores. |
