Under autotrophic microalgae culture system using industrial flue gas, pH drop in media caused by continuous supply of CO2 inhibit the cell growth. Expensive buffering agents were added in media to control the pH of the media, increase the overall cost of culture process. Herein, we developed the economic and large-scale applicable buffering agent using bicarbonate and phosphate buffer system. Bicarbonate buffer system was developed by CO2 dissolution in the alkaline solution; in sequence bicarbonate/phosphate buffer system was developed to enhance the buffer performance in increased CO2 gas condition. Then microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis was cultivated with these buffer solutions under autotrophic outdoor condition with bicarbonate/phosphate buffer system. The result demonstrated 105% and 103% increased biomass and astaxanthin productivity, respectively. |
