Plastic film, such as poly(ethylene terephthalate) and polyethylene, can be used as food packaging film because it is stable against mechanical and chemical damage. However, plastic films exhibit a low oxygen barrier property. To improve this oxygen barrier property requires additional coatings, such as metallic and/or chlorinated polymer. Even with an improved oxygen barrier property, there are environmental and health concerns. We report a highly flexible and transparent coating on commercial PET film using cellulose nanofiber (CNF). CNF is nanofibrillated through chemical pretreatment and mechanical treatment. The hydrophilicity of CNF can affect the oxygen barrier property; thus, we tried to prevent this by additional coating of an organic fluorine layer. Moreover, we demonstrate a packaging film consisting of nanofibrillated CNF and present its potential as a packaging film. |
