In general, the active carbon obtained from carbonization of thermoset resin shows poor mechanical properties, since shrinkage during carbonization is strongly restricted due to the high crosslinking density of thermoset resin and thus much macro pore or void is formed in it. To avoid the weakening of mechanical properties during carbonization, it will be necessary to control the degree of crosslink, but this is much restricted for the thermosetting resin. P(St-co-DVB) bead has been widely used in various areas such as ion exchange resin, packing material in chromatography column and so on. In this study, the degree of crosslink of P(St-co-DVB) was controlled with the content of DVB during suspension polymerization, and various active carbon particles were formed through carbonization of the synthesized copolymer beads. The effect of crosslinking density on the thermal and mechanical properties and the shrinkage during carbonization was also analyzed by DSC, TGA, OM, SEM, and UTM. |
