Polyurethanes (PUs) are one of the most versatile polymers synthesized using polyols and isocyanates. At present, PU monomers, polyol and isocyanate, are derived from petroleum. Recently, biomass has attracted increasing attention as alternative feedstock to replace petroleum-based PU. Polyol can be produced from biomass residue using thermochemical method. Thermochemical liquefaction is an efficient method to convert solid biomass into a liquid product possessing sufficient hydroxyl functionalities. In this study, we used palm kernel cake as feedstock for polyol synthesis by acid liquefaction with polyethylene glycol 400 blended glycerol as the liquefaction solvent. Various reaction conditions (PEG 400 and glycerol ratio, liquefaction temperature, biomass loading, acid loading, liquefaction time) were analyzed and optimized. |
