Effect of Molecular Weight on the Morphology of Bottlebrush Block Copolymer Particles |

The chain-rigidities and the molecular weights of block copolymers (BCPs) can strongly affect their self-assembly behavior, particularly when the BCPs are under confinement. We investigate the self-assembly of bottlebrush BCPs (BBCPs) in three-dimensional confinements. A series of symmetric BBCPs consisted of polystyrene (PS) and polylactide (PLA) side-chains that grafted onto the polynorbornene (PNB) backbone are synthesized with different degrees of polymerization of the PNB (NPNB). Morphological transitions from onion into ellipsoid particles occur as the NPNB of the BBCP increases, which is also predicted from simulations. Furthermore, we investigated the morphological evolutions of BBCP particles, and only ellipsoid particles exhibit the unique axial development of ring-like lamellae domains on the particle surface, followed by the radial propagation into the particle center. Finally, the shape-anisotropies of the ellipsoid particles are analyzed as a function of particle size. |
