Main-chain polymers with rigid, rod-like mesogen manifest the completely inhibited internal rotation and the persistence length equal to the contour length. Introducing flexible spacers endows the polymer backbone with flexibility, thereby allowing a diminished persistence length. In this type of system, property of mesophase is mainly related to the axial ratio of the mesogenic unit rather than the overall conformation of the chain. On the other hand, in the main-chain polymers with bent-core mesogens, it should be considered a significant correlation between the mesogens to align along the tip-direction and the chains to adopt the most stable conformation. Moreover, the latter type of polymers became of interest because these polymers can show polar smectic phase as well as cybotatic nematic phase. |
