Improvement of zero-humidity performance of PEMFC MEA using Nano Sized Dense Structure Catalyst layer |

In this investigation, the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) membrane electrode assembly (MEA) was made by combination of commercial MEA and Nano Size Dense Structure (NSDS) layer to improvement of zero humidity performance. A NSDS layer is fabricated by a phase-separated morphology in an agglomerated catalyst layer of Pt/C and Nafion. To attach the NSDS layer, the binder layer composed by carbon black and Nafion was coated by electrospray method on commercial MEA electrode surface. The electrospray deposition is a process that an aerosol of a solution is ejected from a metal nozzle and is deposited very thinly. The dual electrode of self-humidify MEA is confirmed using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A good performance at zero humidity is obtained because the NSDS layer improves the water-capping effect. A commercial MEA using the NSDS layer electrode exhibits the ultrahigh zero RH fuel-cell performance reaching over 95% performance of a fully humidified MEA. |
