Effect of Humidity on Transmittance and Porosity of Glass Used as Encapsulants for LEDs |

The porosity and resultant transmittance of glass encapsulants for phosphor in glass is a key factor affecting properties of LED packaging. For a phenomenological perspective, degradation of glass at ambient humidity and transmittance of glass are direct analogs. To understand the effect of humidity, this study is focused on exposure of glass frit at different controlled humidity environments and also at different temperatures and holding times prior to sintering. Effect of this exposure on transmittance and porosity of glass after sintering was investigated using scanning electron microscopy, UV-visible, pH and inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry. Heating glass frit to 300oC temperature and 4 hours holding time seems to be favorable conditions to minimize mean pore diameter and hence increasing transmittance. Controlled thermal treatment of powders can be one step towards reducing humidity effect and control on porosity and hence increasing transmittance of glass encapsulants. |
