The concern of detrimental effects on skin such as premature skin aging or skin cancer by sunlight increasingly prevails. According to recent statistical reports, in fact, the rate of malignant melanoma has continuously increased by almost four times for past 40 years. For this reason, there have been lots of research efforts on portable ultra-violet (UV) sensors. Herein, we report UV sensor using block copolymer photonic gels exhibiting responsive full color stop bands to near UV (λ = 320 ~ 400 nm). Photonic gels were prepared by self-assembly of polystyrene-block-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) diblock copolymer. The photonic gels showed strong shift of photonic stop bands in response to the exposure of UV. We found that our photonic gels are exclusively sensitive to UVA (λ = 320 ~ 400 nm), which is considered as a strong skin carcinogen. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of the counter anions on the sensitivity of photonic gels to the UV radiation. |
