Polyelectrolyte hydrogels exhibit unique stimuli responsive properties, and which have been widely utilized for many engineering applications including actuators, drug delivery and sensors. Recently, there have been increasing research efforts of combining hydrogels with other functional materials such as photonic crystals to extend their potential applications. Since the optical properties of photonic gels are directly dictated by the volume transition of hydrogel layers, careful engineering of hydrogels is required for tuning PBG in photonic gels. Herein we report responsive block copolymer photonic gels exhibiting strong reflective multi-colors in the visible regime in response to various chemical and electrical stimuli. We demonstrate that the counter-anions of polyelectrolyte hydrogels play a key role for modulating PBG position. |
