제목 Microstructural Analysis of Supramolecular Liquid Crystalline Mesophases by Scattering and TEM methods
초록 We investigate new examples of thermotropic liquid crystalline phases such as hexagonal columnar (fh), cubic and frustrated smectic liquid crystalline phases. The micro-structure and morphology of these side chain (various amphiphilic and dendrimeric) and main chain liquid crystalline polymers are studied, based on investigation of textures and defects using high resolution electron microscopy and diffraction (ED + XRD) methods.
The phase symmetry, dimension and local structure of the amphiphilic and dendrimeric molecules have been clearly determined by controlling the orientation of the columnar mesophase by surface condition, so that both homeotropic and planar ordering of columns have been achieved. Low surface energy planes are identified through examination of the morphology of ultrathin films, which contain holes or terraces on a free surface. The stiffness of such columns could be evaluated, both quantitatively and qualitatively, based on examination of the planar texture, and of the defects contained therein. A cubic mesophase has been identified, and comprises spherical assemblies of dendrimeric molecules. Comparison with x-ray and modeling experiments are made.
The microstructure and morphology of the columnar materials are compared with a crystallizable thermotropic main-chain polyester, with a decamethylene flexible spacer is studied via high resolution electron microscopy (HREM), electron diffraction (ED) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). From analysis of electron and x-ray diffraction patterns from quenched specimens, a model of smectic ordering has been proposed. Polymorphism of the crystalline state has been observed, depending on the crystallization. Disclinations have also been examined.
