Phthalate derived plasticizers for poly (Vinyl Chloride) (PVC) are still controversial, concerning its negative environmental impact and potential adverse health effects in humans. Vegetable oils are biologically safe and environmentally friendly products which have great potential to replace phthalate plasticizers. In this research, the hydroxyl group on Castor Oil was replaced with ester group by acetylation process to improve its intermolecular interactions with PVC. The acetylation of castor oil (CO) was successfully characterized using FTIR and ¹H NMR. Rheometric analysis was performed on the Acetylated Castor oil (ACO)/PVC plastisol to investigate processibility and compatibility of the ACO/PVC system. The thermal and mechanical properties show promising possibilities of ACO as an alternative to phthalate plasticizers.
