Poly(ethylene Oxide)s (PEO)s have been developed for various applications in biomedical and pharmaceutical areas. PEO modified surfaces increase hydrophilicity as well as reduce protein adsorption, macrophage attack, platelet adhesion and decrease immune response. Star-shaped PEOs have spherical shape and multiple functional groups which show additional advantages compared to linear PEOs. Star-shaped PEOs with different number of arms and high molecular weight were synthesized via ring opening polymerization in DMSO using diphenylmethyl potassium (DPMK) as a strong base catalyst. Polymerization was carried out in a moisture-free vacuum line at 40 oC for 3 days. Terminal groups were functionalized with amino groups via chain transfer reaction and then natural-inspired adhesion agents were introduced into the chain ends of star-shaped PEOs for biomedical application. |
