To develop hydrocarbon-based ion exchange membrane with superior chemical stability for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs), polybenzimidazole membranes have been studied recently. Branched poly(2,5-benzimidazole) (T-ABPBI), one of the ABPBI derivatives, with controlled molecular weight was prepared by reacting 3,4-diaminobenzoic acid with a trifunctional monomer in the presence of poly(phosphoric acid). The reacted T-ABPBI solution was directly casted onto the substrate, employing the direct casting method, to fabricate the membrane. The amorphous structure of the membrane was confirmed by x-ray diffraction analysis. T-ABPBI, which was immersed in 4M H2SO4, was tested for its acid doping level, permeability, area resistance, and VRFB cell performance, varying the thickness of the membrane. |
