Moisture barrier properties of kraft papers coated with different latexes of poly(styrene-co-butadiene) |

Recently, packaging systems based on papers are attracting attentions due to recyclability and biodegradation. In paper based packaging of foods, barrier properties against moisture are important to keep the contents fresh. In order to improve the moisture barrier properties of kraft papers, spray coating on the papers with different latexes of poly(styrene-co-butadiene) containing carboxylic acids was investigated. Moisture permeation rate of the kraft papers decreased and then leveled off with increasing the amount of latex for the coating. It was found that the addition of glycidyl propyl trimethoxy silane (GPTMS) into the latexes resulted in the improvement of moisture barrier properties by the cross linking via sol-gel reactions of GPTMS and the carboxylic acids of latexes. |
