Well-defined model branched polymers are frequently used in rheological study. H-shaped polymer which has four arms and one crossbar is one of the simplest examples of branched polymers having two branch points. It can be prepared by tailored anionic polymerization to yield precisely controlled molar mass and chain architecture. But imperfect stoichiometry and side reactions leads to inhomogeneity in H-shaped polymer. To make things worse, many side products are hardly noticeable by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) analysis. In this study, H-shaped polybutadiene and its precursors were characterized by temperature gradient interaction chromatography (TGIC) with multiple detection. Several peaks appeared in TGIC chromatogram and their absolute molar mass were determined by light scattering detection. More than 10 components were identified in TGIC chromatogram by using Gaussian fitting and their structure were inferred from their molar mass data and the synthesis mechanism. |
