Light-triggered shape memory polymers are relatively new kind of smart materials having diverse technological applications. In this study, polycaprolatone(PCL) was synthesized by surface initiated ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone in the presence of polydopamine (PDA) nanoparticle with a size of approximately 200 nm. Then, terminal hydroxyl group of PCL grafted onto the PDA nanoparticles were converted to acrylate group via the reaction with 2-isocyanatoethyl acrylate. PCL networks containing PDA nanoparticles were prepared by UV-initiated thiol-acrylate reaction. The UV cured network exhibit shape memory effect on exposure to near-infrared (NIR) light, indicating that the PDA nanoparticles acted as NIR-triggered nanoheaters. Thermomechanical properties of the networks with different content of PDA as well as type of multi-thiol compounds were also examined by tensile testing, DMA and DSC. |
