Polyesterfication between poly(oxyethylene) and adipic acid: Effect of molecular weight of poly(oxyethylene) |

We investigate the effect of molecular size of poly(oxyethylene) on the rate and degree of the polymerization between adipic acid and poly(oxyethylene). To make the poly(oxyethylene-co-adipate) product have -OH group at the both ends, two equivalent of poly(oxyethylene) to adipic acid was maintained. Stannous 2-ethylhexanoate catalyst was used at the concentration of 0.016 mol catalyst/one mol adipic acid and at 0.48 wt.% of total reactant mixture. The polyesterification rate was interpreted with the acid value data of the reactant-product mixture. The degree of polymerization was calculated using the acid value and hydroxy value of the produced poly(oxyethylene-co-adipate)diol. In the case of using 0.016 mol stannous 2-ethylhexanoate per an adipic acid mol, the polyesterification rate decreased with increasing molecular length of poly(oxyethylene). At 0.48 wt% the catalyst, the reaction rate also exhibited decreasing tendency with increasing molecular length of poly(oxyethylene). |
