Polyethylene(PE) wax is used in various applications such as printing inks and hot-melt adhesives. However, when it is used as a composite material together with a polar material, the physical properties are greatly deteriorated due to weak interaction at the interface. To solve this problem, the PE wax is modified to have some polarity through grafting with poar component. However, the grafting yield is generally very low due to different characteristics of PE wax and polar component. In this study, alternating copolymerization technique is employed in the grafting reaction in order to solve the low grafting yield. Styrene and maleic anhydride were used as monomers and benzoyl peroxide and dicumyl peroxide were used as initiators for the grafting reaction. Styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer grafting onto PE wax showed the higher grafting yield compared to the grafting reaction with maleic anhydride alone. |
