In this presentation, it is reviewed what progress has been made in polymer electrolyte applications over the last two decades. It is also discussed what problems remain to overcome for their further advanced application. The most important application of polymer electrolytes would include lithium secondary batteries, polymer fuel cells, and solar cells. Li-ion batteries have a great success, however, they often suffer from explosion accident. Accordingly lithium polymer batteries attract more attention and much intensive studies are strongly required. For polymer fuel cells, in spite of many different research efforts, there are still many problems to tackle for commercial application. The creation of new interfacial layer is inevitable in both lithium secondary batteries and polymer fuel cells. The chemical and physical structures of this layer play a crucial role in determination of the cell performance. Very unfortunately, there is much poorer understanding on this behavior. |
