A variety of drug carriers have been designed to release multiple drugs at controlled rate, which can improve therapeutic efficacy. Although uniform biodegradable microparticles have been prepared by microfluidics to provide controlled rate of drug release, there is practical method to encapsulate multiple drugs and release them in programmable manner. Here, we report a microfluidic method to create various types of uniform microcarriers with multiple compartments through phase separation which are able to encapsulate multiple distinct chemicals in their own compartment. The configuration of the microparticles can be exclusively selected from several different shapes, according to a pair of polymers, organic solvent, and pH value of collection liquid. Moreover, distinct model drugs are spontaneously separated into compartments with higher affinity, which are then released from microcarriers in a controlled manner. |
