Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to prepare sol-gel polymer solutions through chemical cross-linking or physical phase transformation. During gelation behaviors, PAN solutions were gradually solidified, and the solutions behaved more like an elastic solid beyond a critical point in terms of either polymer concentration, water content, aging time, and heat treatment. The gelation of PAN solutions may affect the properties and formation of the precursor fibers and carbon fibers which may be dependent on the state of gelation such as water content, temperature, and mechanical stress field. In this study, we measured the gelation behavior of PAN solutions to investigate the rheological and dielectric characterizations of PAN gels according to the change of water content and the influence of heat treatment. |
