Segregated structure of graphene enveloped polymer beads for high performance EMI shielding applications |

Herein, we report a facile approach to synthesize reduced graphene oxide encapsulated polymer matrix composites. First, the graphene oxide was added in DI water at 1mg/ml concentration followed by addition of polystyrene beads (PSb) and Hydroiodic acid (HI) for insitu reduction of graphene oxide to yield graphene coated PSb powder (rGO-c-PSb). The rGO-c-PSb was then tested for electrical conductivity and EMI shielding measurements. A high EMI shielding value above 20dB was recorded in measured frequency range. Alternatively, a controlled sample with thermally reduced graphene oxide was added in a polystyrene/DMF solution followed by coagulation in methanol to obtain the composite powder (rGO/PS) for EMI measurement. Unlike the rGO-c-PSb, the rGO/PS samples showed much low EMI shielding (10dB) and low dielectric values due to non-homogenous distribution of filler in polymer matrix as compared to rGO-c-PSb which has segregated structure and better filler distribution. |
