A novel approach to High Molecular Weight Polyvinyl acetate and their novel block copolymers by Cu(II) Medicated Living Radical Polymerization |

The polymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) was performed successfully in the presence of CuBr2/Terpryridine with high molecular weight PVAc and with a comparatively narrow molecular weight distribution (Mn>100,000,Mw/Mn=1.4–1.8). Alternatively,well defined PVAc-b-PMMA Copolymers were prepared by using Cu(II) mediated atom transfer radical polymerization without an external reducing agent and free radical initiator for the first time with high molecular weight and relatively narrow molecular weight distribution (Mn=120,000,Mw/Mn=1.25). Subsequently, the polymerization proceeded by a living mechanism based on the fact that the first-order time-conversion plots linearly increased. A linear increase in the plots of the molecular weight versus the conversion also supported the living nature of the polymerization Hydrolysis of the PMMA-b-PVAc produced a PMMA-b-poly(vinyl alcohol) amphiphilic diblock copolymer. |
