Emulsion polymerization of styrene in the presence of poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)(PVP) produces sub-micron scale spherical latex particles in water . PVP act as surfactant in the reaction, and AIBA(2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionamide) dihydrochloride) is used as an initiator to get positively charged surface of the particles. The synthesized particles were analyzed by the dynamic light scattering on the aqeuous dispersions and by SEM analysis on the dried particles. The size of latex particle could be varied by using the different molecular weight PVPs and their amounts. It was found that the increased molecular weight of PVP decreases the particle size, and the increase in the amount of PVP decreases the size of the resulting particles. |
