A unique class of molecules with switchable elements are the mechanically interlocked ones. These compounds can be designed such that their movable elements can be controlled by external stimuli, such as pH, electricity, or light. We report the synthesis and operation of a supramolecular valve that relies on the pH-controllable crown ether/dialkylammonium ion based recognition motif as the driving force for pseudorotaxane formation. In this work, we use two kinds of mesoporous silica, MCM-41 and SBA-15. The release of probe molecules from the hybrid MCM-41 and SBA-15 into the supernatant can be measured by monitoring the emission spectrum. We also use guest molecules of various size. To verify the amount of releasing guest molecules, nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherms can be measured. In addition, the effect on size of guest molecules can be verified by the UV/Visble spectra or the photoluminescence spectra. |
