We investigated the oxygen diffusion in polymer/graphene thin films. Smoluchowski equation was solved to interpret the reduced diffusivity and solubility. The Nielson approximation for the tortuosity of the gas diffusion path was compared to the results. In the experimental study, poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)/graphene oxide(GO) nanocomposites were synthesized by a modified Hummers method and a solvent-mixing method. We show that GO is nearly exfoliated in the PVA/GO composites and GO is an excellent gas barrier itself without any reduction. We demonstrate that oxygen transmission rate(O2TR) of PVA/GO film containing 0.3wt.% GO reduces to 80% of that of PVA with 93% light transmittance at 550nm. Both the diffusivity and solubility are reduced by dispersing RGO into PVA. However, only the solubility is reduced when GO is dispersed in PVA. The diffusivity of the PVA/RGO-coated film follows the qualitative feature of the Nielsen approximation, but those of the PVA/GO-coated film do not follows. |
