Electrically Bistable Properties of Layer-by-Layer Assembled Catalase Multilayers |

Electrochemical properties of catalase proteins, which can cause the reversible changes in the current according to their redox reactions in solution, are of the fundametal and practical importance in bio-electrochemical applications. The redox properties often depend on the chemical activity of transition metal ions as cofactors within the active sites of enzymes. Here, we demonstrate that the reversible resistance in dried redox protein films can be caused by the externally applied voltage as a result of charge trap/release of haem redox couples. Furthermore, we show that the novel electrical switching properties of redox proteins can be applied to bio-inspired electronics such as the nonvolatile memory devices. |
