Since Igaki-Tamai stent had been introduced as the first absorbable stent implanted in humans, the development of fully biodegradable polymeric stents for percutaneous coronary intervention has increased interests because of thedisadvantages of a metallic stent. However, for constructing the ideal biodegradable stent, several problems should be settled as followed; 1) low pH around vessel tissue due to hydrolysis of aliphatic polyester bonds, 2) the control of surface roughness producing during coating process, which might become the cause of platelet activation, and 3) the controlled release from drug-incorporated matrix for suppressing the proliferation of smooth muscle cells or accelerating the reendothelialization. Here, I would like to present the biodegradable drug-eluting stents. |
