Water Processable Conjugated Polymer Nanowires Using Photo-crosslinking and Click-functionalization of Azide Incorporated Polythiophene |

Replacing organic solvents in the processing of conjugated polymer based organic electronics has emerged as important issues due to their toxicity on human health and the environment as well as high energy-consuming synthesis. Herein, we report a development of water and alcohol processable nanowires (NWs) with well-defined crystalline nanostructure based on solution assembly of azide functionalized poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT-azide), followed by photo-crosslinking and click-reaction of the azide functional group. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) functionalization of the photo-crosslinked P3HT-azide NWs allowed their stable dispersion in aqueous solvents including methanol and water, while maintaining well-ordered NW structure with high optoelectronic properties. Finally, we demonstrated the use of these NWs as active component in water and alcohol processed organic thin film transistors. |
