제목 Terminal Alkyl Group Effect on Phase Behavior of Rod-Coil Molecules
초록 We studied the effect of the coil length and the terminal alkyl group in the rod part on the thermotropic liquid crystal phase behavior of a rod-coil molecule: alkyl 4-[4-[oxypoly(propyleneoxy)-propyloxy]-4’-biphenylcarboxyloxy]4’-biphenylcarboxylate with a varying length of poly(propylene oxide) coil. The terminal alkyl group was either ethyl or methyl group. The rod-coil molecules were fractionated by temperature gradient interaction chromatography into truly monodisperse molecular species and the thermal phase transition behavior of the fractionated samples was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy and X-ray scattering.
Although it was expected to observe a significant effect of the coil length on the thermotropic phase behavior in crystalline as well as in mesophase states, it was rather surprising to find a far more significant effect of the terminal alkyl group in the rod part. A small change from ethyl to methyl ester results in a dramatic change not only in the transition temperature but also in the structure of the mesophases.
