Z-axis controllable columnar structures from rod-coil molecules |

We present here a novel observation of Z-axis controllable columnar structures from rod-coil molecules. The molecules consist of the 120o bend of the aromatic core and the poly(propylene)oxide (PPO) chain with systematic variation in the length. These molecules self-assemble into well-defined 2D and 3D ordered hexagonal columnar structures with various length of Z-axis that change significantly on variation in the length of PPO chain. X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques were used to investigate the self-assembled structures of these rod-coil molecules. The molecule based on the shortest chain (PPO n=5) organized into the 2D-ordered hexagonal columnar structure with longest Z-axis length. As increasing in the length of PPO chain, the molecules self-assembled into uniform 2D and 3D ordered hexagonal columnar structures with shorter Z-axis length |
