Electron Microscopy for Morphological Characterization of Cellulose Nanomaterial (CNM) |

It is essential to characterize material properties of various nanocellulosic materials such as nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) or cellulose nanofibril (CNF), and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), which have been termed as Cellulose NanoMaterial (CNM) by ISO (International Organization for Standardization). Electron microscopy is a critical investigation and analytical method for morphological characterization of CNM. Accurate morphological analysis requires high-quality micrographs acquired from the proper use of electron microscope and associated sample preparation methods. Characterization standards from ISO and CSA (Canadian Standards Association) describe details of characterization methods and references. This presentation provides a brief status of international standards for CNM and an overview of micro- and nano-structural analysis of cellulose, as investigated using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. |
