Thelifespan of a product is determined not only by its durability, but also by itsfunctionality. The durability of a product is a fundamental property, not abasis for deciding whether to purchase a product. In other words, products withonly good durability are not attractive to customers. Since scratches andcracks are the ultimate cause of durability, self-healing performance that canheal damage to a product can extend its lifespan. In this study, we designed aself-healing and biocompatible polymer-based hydrogel using boronic esters. Theboronic acid esters used as the crosslinking mechanism are non-toxic andreversible at low temperatures, and these properties allow them to be appliedin self-healing hydrogel patches or wearable devices. The hydrogel was preparedby in situ free-radical polymerization, and its mechanical and self-healingproperties were investigated at room temperature. |
