The influence of additives, such as slip agent and talc particle, on the scratch characterization of five PP-based thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) systems was studied using a newly developed ASTM scratch test methodology. The addition of slip agent and talc particle to TPO systems help to significantly increase critical load for the onset of scratch visibility. In addition, the incorporation of surface-treated talc to TPO systems results in improvement in resistance to scratch visibility and particle-dispersion into polymer matrix. Meanwhile, the untreated talc appears to hinder the migration of slip agent to the free surface of TPO systems due to a physical or chemical interaction. This leads to poor scratch performance. The presence of slip agent and surface-treated talc particle on TPO systems provides the improvement in critical load and scratch visibility. |
