Polydiacetylens (PDAs) are structurally and optically very unique conjugated polymers. PDAs are generated by polymerization of self-assembled diacetylenes (DAs). PDAs are intrinsically supramolecular polymers in which strong interchain interactions prevent free C-C sigma-bond rotation of side chains linked to the main ene-yne backbone. This feature enables extensive overlap of the p-orbitals in the ene-yne units in these polymers, which results in their visible light absorption properties. The unique property of nanostructured PDA that leads to their application as sensing elements is the occurrence of a color (typically blue-to-red) and fluorescence (non-to-red) changes that take place in response to a variety of environmental perturbations such as heat, solvent, mechanical stress, pH, and specific ligand-receptor interactions. In this symposium, recent advances in the area of nanostructured PDA-based chemosensors focused on our results will be presented. |
