Sulfated alginates were prepared from sodium alginate, using simple sulfating reagent and varying sulfur feeding ratio. Similarly sulfated low molecular weight (S-LMWA’s) and very low molecular weight alginates (S-LLMWA’s) were also prepared from respective low molecular weight alginates. The resultant sulfated alginates compounds were structural characterized by employing various analytical techniques. Increase in sulfur content or sulfation was confirmed with FT-IR, NMR, ICP-AES, EA and GPC results. Interestingly, none of four samples (HMWF, S-LLMWA-4.0, LLMWA and LLMWF), do not exhibit any hemolytic activity up to 950 μg/ml concentration level. Thus results indicate that prepared sulfated alginate also showed blood compatibility nature and can be applied for any clinical applications. |
