Perfluorinated sulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes have been used for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) because of their high proton conductivity and chemical stability. Nevertheless, there are some disadvantages such as high cost and mechanical stability under high temperature condition. Recently, sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)(SPAES) have been studied as candidates to overcome drawbacks of the PFSA. In this study, novel multi-block SPAESs bearing two kinds of sulfonated hydrophilic blocks were synthesized by nucleophilic aromatic polycondensation. Different hydrophilic oligomers sharing same hydrophobic blocks gave us exact comparison of effect of hydrophilic blocks. The SPAESs were synthesized to have different IECs by combining hydrophobic and hydrophilic oligomers with different block lengths. Not only humidity dependence of proton conductivity but also other physical properties, such as water uptake, IEC, morphologies, were investigated as PEFMC application. |
