Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)s(SPEEK) have been developed to alternate Nafion for direct methanol fuel cells. Most SPEEKs were synthesized by the approach of postsulfonation of commercial polymers or direct copolymerization of sulfonated monomers. The SPEEKs with high degree of sulfonation typically exhibited high proton conductivity. However, the mechanical properties of sPEEKs tend to decrease progressively with sulfonation for extreme swelling, which makes the long-term stability of sulfonated membrane questionable. Cross-linking is a simple and efficient way to enhance mechanical strength. In this present study, a series of cross-linkable SPEEKs with pendent sulfonation groups were synthesized and used to prepare electrolyte membranes. These cross-linked SPEEK membranes with pendent sulfonation groups exhibited excellent mechanical properties, thermal stability, and good dimensional stability in hot water. |
