Design of Sulfur-Rich Polymers towards New Cathode Materials of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries |

Rechargeable lithium-sulfur batteries have been considered as one of the most promising future electrochemical energy storage systems on account of high theoretical specific energy density, which is 3 times higher than that of Li ion batteries. Herein, we report the development of new Li-S batteries by synthesizing sulfur-rich polymers having three-dimensionally interconnected sulfur domains. Porous trithiocyanuric acid (TTCA) crystals were employed as soft templates for the synthesis, where the ring-opening polymerization of elemental sulfur was taken place along the thiol surfaces of TTCA crystals. Our Li-S cells demonstrated reversible discharge capacity of 945 mAh/g after 100 cycle at 0.2C with high capacity retention of 92%. These Li-S cells also showed improved rate performance of 1210mAh/g at 0.1C and 730mAh/g at 5C. The markedly enhanced rate performance of our cells was rationalized by facilitated fast Li+-ion transport along the organized amine moieties in TTCA ring. |
