Emulsion Polymerization of Polysulfide Polymer Particles in Aqueous Surfactant Solutions |

Elemental sulfur exhibits a number of promising electrochemical, biological and optical properties for use in energy, battery, and antibacterial materials applications. However, elemental sulfur suffers from its poor processability due to easy depolymerization of polysulfide back to elemental sulfur. In the present work, we tried to solve this problem by synthesizing sulfur-containing polymer formed by the copolymerization of ionized sulfur in a strong alkaline solution and organic monomers. It has already been known that the ionized sulfur in strong alkaline aqueous solution readily reacts with organic monomers. The material formed in this way, however, is insoluble in almost all solvents. Therefore, we tried to disperse the sulfur-organic copolymers in aqueous solution as processable spherical colloidal particles by emulsion polymerization. |
